Making Sense of Depression & Treatment

How We Treat Depression

We specialize in evidence-based treatment for MDD, Persistent Depressive Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder at EMDR Therapy Solutions & Wellness. By clarifying the differences among these conditions, we can match you with the right interventions for meaningful progress.

Great Started➜

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

Major Depressive Disorder isn’t just a rough patch. It’s a sustained period of low mood and loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, often affecting sleep, energy, concentration, work, and relationships.

Common symptoms:

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or tearfulness

  • Little or no interest/pleasure in usual activities

  • Noticeable changes in appetite or weight

  • Sleep problems (trouble falling/staying asleep or oversleeping)

  • Low energy or ongoing fatigue

  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions

  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

If you’re thinking about harming yourself or someone else, call 988 in the U.S., contact emergency services, or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood condition marked by shifts between high (mania or hypomania) and low (depressive) states. These changes can affect energy, sleep, judgment, and daily functioning.

Common signs of manic/hypomanic episodes:

  • Intense energy, elevated or irritable mood

  • Racing thoughts; talking more or faster than usual

  • Needing much less sleep and still feeling “wired”

  • Impulsive or risky choices (spending, substances, sex, driving)

Common signs of depressive episodes:

  • Deep sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness

  • Low energy and fatigue

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities

  • Trouble concentrating, slowed thinking, or indecision

If safety is a concern or symptoms escalate, seek immediate support or call 988 in the U.S.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)

Persistent Depressive Disorder also called dysthymia is a long-lasting form of depression. Mood is low most of the day, on most days, for two years or more, and it can quietly interfere with work, relationships, and daily routines.

Common symptoms:

  • A persistent sense of hopelessness

  • Low self-esteem or self-criticism

  • Changes in appetite (eating too little or too much)

  • Sleep problems (insomnia or oversleeping)

  • Low energy or frequent fatigue

  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions

Depression Treatment at EMDR Therapy Solutions & Wellness

Serving adults statewide via telehealth and in person in the Plymouth area, we tailor care to your goals, pace, and daily life. Our clinicians use an EMDR-centered, evidence-based approach to lift mood, reduce relapse risk, and restore momentum.

What treatment can include:

  • EMDR: Target stuck memories and negative core beliefs (“I’m not enough,” “Nothing will change”) to reduce shame and reactivity.

  • CBT: Shift unhelpful thought patterns and rebuild routines that support mood.

  • ACT: Clarify values and take small, doable actions—even when motivation is low.

  • DBT-informed skills: Emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and mindful communication.

  • Behavioral Activation: Re-engage with meaningful activities to break avoidance cycles.

  • Interpersonal & attachment-focused work: Improve connection, boundaries, and support

  • Mindfulness & relaxation: Breath work, grounding, and body-based regulation.

  • Psychoeducation & relapse-prevention planning: Understand patterns, track progress (e.g., PHQ-9), and create a maintenance plan.
