Understanding and Managing Anxiety Disorders

Noticing What Anxiety Looks Like

Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic. It can manifest as tension in your body, racing thoughts, constant “what if” worries, trouble sleeping, or a feeling of being on edge. It may also lead to avoidance, procrastination, perfectionism, or people-pleasing. If this feels familiar, you’re not alone and support can help you feel calmer and more in control.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

A Closer Look at Generalized Anxiety Disorder

GAD is marked by ongoing, hard-to-switch-off worry about everyday areas of life—health, finances, family, work, and the future—even when there’s little immediate reason to be concerned. People often anticipate worst-case scenarios, which can drain energy and make it tough to focus or relax.

Common symptoms

  • Feeling restless or “on edge”

  • Getting tired easily

  • Trouble concentrating or mind going blank

  • Irritability

  • Muscle tension or aches

  • Sleep problems (difficulty falling/staying asleep or unrestful sleep)

Understanding Social Anxiety

Social anxiety involves a strong fear of social or performance situations, driven by worries about being judged, embarrassed, or humiliated. It’s more than shyness the fear often leads to avoiding people or events and can interfere with work, school, and relationships.

Common signs:

  • Fear of situations where others might evaluate you

  • Persistent worry about saying or doing something embarrassing

  • Intense discomfort when meeting or speaking with new people

  • Skipping or escaping social events to feel safer

  • Physical reactions such as blushing, sweating, trembling, or a shaky voice

Panic Disorder

Do I Have Panic Disorder?

Panic disorder involves recurring, unexpected panic attacks sudden waves of intense fear with physical symptoms like a racing heart, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, numbness/tingling, or a feeling of impending doom. Many people begin to worry about the next attack and may avoid places or situations where episodes have happened before.

Common signs:

  • Repeated, sudden panic attacks

  • Heart palpitations or rapid heartbeat

  • Sweating, trembling, or shaking

  • Shortness of breath or choking sensations

  • Feeling unreal or detached (derealization/depersonalization)

  • Fear of losing control, “going crazy,” or dying

  • Persistent anxiety about future attacks

  • Avoiding situations linked to past attacks
